Handle concreting materials


Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely manually-handle and store concreting materials and components in preparation for concreting work.

The unit supports preparing concrete materials and components for work on residential, commercial and industrial construction sites, including multi-storey sites with designated storage areas for concreting materials and components.

It includes:

applying environmental management principles

identifying and safely handling hazardous materials and waste in accordance with safety data sheets (SDSs).

It applies to specialist concreters working as members of a team.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in some states. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.


Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe what needs to be done to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan and prepare to handle concreting materials.

1.1 Review and clarify task to handle concreting materials.

1.2 Review work health and safety (WHS)requirements for the task, including SDSs, in accordance with safety plans and policies.

1.3 Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.

1.4 Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.

1.5 Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

2. Handle and sort concrete materials and components.

2.1 Erect identified safety signage and barricades and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).

2.2 On delivery to site, check concrete materials and components for conformity to material schedule, plans and specifications.

2.3 Move concrete materials and components to specified location applying safe handling procedures.

2.4 Stack or stockpile concrete materials and components in accordance with job location and task sequence to facilitate identification and retrieval.

2.5 Store concrete materials and components clear of access ways and protect against damage.

2.6 Handle and position components ready for installation in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications, plans and task specifications.

3. Handle and remove concrete materials and components on completion of task.

3.1 Identify hazardous material and apply waste management procedures from SDSs and requirements of statutory and regulatory authorities.

3.2 Remove non-toxic materials using correct procedures.

3.3 Use dust suppression procedures to minimise health risk to work personnel and others.

4. Clean up after handling concreting materials.

4.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.

4.2 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.
